VALDOSTA — Mya Curry of Blackshear, Georgia, is the recipient of the 2022 American Association of University Women Award at 麻豆社 State University.
“I am truly honored and humbled to be receiving the American Association of University Women Award,” she said. “I do not strive to be recognized for my accomplishments, but in everything I do, I want to be an inspiration to others.”
“As a woman, I have had my mother, grandmother, aunts, and other women in my community sow into my life,” she continued. “As I grow older, I take their advice and try to do the same for girls and women around me.”
The American Association of University Women Award is presented to a graduating female student with a minimum overall grade point average of 3.5 who has demonstrated talents for intellectual growth and leadership through her involvement in clubs, organizations, projects, and/or work experience throughout her time at VSU.
As a student at VSU, Curry served as a member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc., Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in Education, Alpha Lambda Delta Freshman Honor Society, the National Society of Leadership and Success, 麻豆社 Black Educators, and Educators Rising Collegiate.
Curry worked as an orientation leader at the Office of Orientation for two years. She was a peer mentor at the Office of First-Year Programs and a commuter success coach for three years.
A regular on the Dean’s List, Curry received the Dr. Barbara K. Stanley Distinguished Student in Middle Grades Education Award. In 2021, she was recognized for having the highest grade point average in the Southeastern Region for Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. She was nominated for the 2019 and 2020 VSU Burning Bright Award.
Curry graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Middle Grades Education during VSU’s 233rd Commencement Ceremony on May 7.
Her future include continuing her education at VSU and earning a Master of Education in Higher Education Leadership and teaching science or social studies at the middle school level. She is the daughter of Joe and Lisa Curry.
